Funeral for Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes begins in hometown

They were best mates -- and now Australian cricket captain Michael Clarke is playing a key role in farewelling his friend Phillip Hughes' at his funeral Wednesday.

An emotional Clarke is scheduled to deliver a tribute and act as a pallbearer at the funeral of his friend, who died after being hit in the head by a cricket ball last week.

The South Australia batsman, who would have turned 26 Sunday, was fatally injured when hit by a "bouncer," a short-pitched, aggressive delivery that bounces up towards the batsman's torso.

The ball somehow evaded Hughes' protective helmet and struck him near his left ear as he swiveled to play an attacking shot.

His funeral service began Wednesday in a packed school hall in his home town of Macksville -- a small town on Australia's eastern coast, where Hughes was raised on a banana and beef farm.
