Cheteshwar Pujara, L Balaji and Murali Kartik were, today, released from the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) squad ahead of the 2015 edition of Indian Premier League (IPL), ESPNCricinforeported. This was the last day for the franchises to provide the IPL Governing Council with the list of players they wanted to release.
By releasing these players, KXIP now have an additional sum of Rs 4.7 crore in their purse, which they can use in the auction in January 2015. Pujara was picked up for a sum of Rs 1.9 crore in the auction held before the 2014 edition while KXIP shelled out Rs 1.8 crore and 1 crore for Balaji and Kartik respectively.
"It is to do with Twenty20 and performance. Pujara is really a big name for Test cricket. He is a solid player, but he does not fit with the current team's composition in his role as a Twenty20 batsman. That is the same reason for the other two also," a KXIP official was quoted as stating.
All three players had average outings in the 7th edition of the tournament. Pujara averaged just 25, managing only 125 runs in the six matches that he played. Balaji picked up 12 wickets in 9 matches but he was also expensive, finishing with an economy of 8.79. Kartik, on the other hand, got to play only two matches and he ended up with forgettable figures of 1/51 and 0/40.
